On August 1, Indiana capped what a paid relative or legal guardian can bill under the Health and Wellness Waiver at 40 combined hours a week per waiver participant. The rule is real, it is dated, and it is enforceable. We confirmed it across provider notices and The Arc of Indiana's waiver tracker. The state page that should carry it was last updated in 2024.

That is the whole problem with asking a general chatbot whether Indiana pays family caregivers. It will say yes, and it will be wrong by forty hours, because the answer changed three weeks ago and the training data did not. A registry that tracks effective dates answers correctly. A registry that stores only a program name and a phone number ships stale within a quarter.

The cap is not really the story. The silence around it is. For a family whose daughter left part-time work because the waiver made caregiving compensable, forty hours is the difference between a plan that works and a plan that quietly stopped working three weeks ago. Care changed for some number of Indiana families this month, and the notification system for that change was a search engine and luck.
