The Missing Item on the Abundance List

Peter Diamandis published a piece this weekend arguing that tech's trust problem is a product problem. His evidence is uncomfortable and correct. 71 percent of Americans now oppose data centers in their communities, a higher share than oppose nuclear plants, and he notes that governors in Texas and Pennsylvania who backed those projects have reversed course under constituent pressure. His read is that the backlash is economic rather than philosophical. People are not frightened of matrix multiplication. They are looking at their bills.

His prescription is to stop issuing safety pledges and start proving abundance where people can actually see it. He names four places. Health, housing, education, cost of living.

There is a fifth, and it is the one where the other four arrive together. Caregiving.

63 million Americans are caring for someone right now. Worldwide, the number of people over 60 reaches 2.1 billion by 2050. A family in the middle of it is absorbing a health crisis, a housing decision, an education in a system nobody taught them, and a cost shock, often in the same month. The bill does not always arrive as money. Frequently it arrives as the daughter who leaves the workforce.

So what does proof look like at the scale of one household?

For two months our own resource finder refused to name a single local organization. That was deliberate. Ask a language model for the home health agency nearest your father and it will produce one, confidently, with a phone number that rings nowhere. Hand that to someone at 2am and you have made the worst night of their year worse. So the tool named only verified national helplines and said plainly that it could not do more.

Last week we replaced the guess with the public record. Every Medicare-certified home health agency and hospice in the country, 12,454 of them, read straight from federal data, ranked by how close they actually are, free and without a signup. The language model never touches any of it. That is the entire reason we are willing to put a phone number on a screen.

This is not abundance. It is one cost, lowered slightly, for one kind of family. But it is the shape of the thing Diamandis is asking for, and it is the only version of trust that has ever worked. Not a promise about what the technology will not do. A record of what it already did.
