A self-driving 'smart toilet on wheels' for elders goes viral
The internet laughed at the wrong part
A self-driving toilet is an easy thing to dunk on. The clip earned its 600,000 views as a punchline. But spend one week as the person helping a parent to the bathroom at 3 a.m. — the transfers, the falls that happen right there, the quiet loss of dignity on both sides — and the laughter gets thin. Toileting and continence are among the heaviest, least-talked-about burdens in caregiving, and the ones families break on first.
That doesn't make this particular device the answer. A novelty that arrives by remote control is not the same as something safe, affordable, and dignified in a real home — and we won't know which this is until it's tested somewhere that isn't a launch video. But the instinct underneath it is right: the help caregivers need most is rarely the glamorous kind. It's the unglamorous, daily, physical work no one wants to name. Build honestly for that, and we'll stop laughing.
