App-Based Support Improves Dementia Caregivers' Well-Being
Quiet Until It Is Needed
Six challenging behaviors a month. That is the average a family manages when dementia is in the house, and it is a number easy to miss because nobody counts them out loud.
The Drexel WeCareAdvisor trial is worth reading for what it does not claim. The effects were small to moderate. Caregivers opened the app about once a month. Nothing here erased agitation or wandering. What moved was the distress, and the researchers make the sharper point almost in passing, that a caregiver's distress predicts whether a family reaches for outside services better than the severity of the symptoms does.
That reframes what a caregiving tool is for. It is not a daily habit to be maintained. It is something a family opens at the moment a behavior lands, wanting one workable answer before the night gets worse. Most software in this category is built to be used constantly. The evidence keeps suggesting families want the opposite, a tool that stays quiet until it is needed.
