From Human Voices to AI: Research Empowers Dementia Caregivers

You Were Told. It Didn't Stick.

Nearly every caregiver tool built in the last three years solves for delivery. Better search, better answers, better chatbots, faster access to the right information at the right moment. The unstated assumption is that the caregiver who knows what to do will do it.

A cognitive psychology lab at TCU started somewhere else. Their premise is that the information already arrived, in a discharge packet or a neurologist's office or a two-hour class, and did not survive the drive home. So they are building instruction the way learning science says instruction has to work: retrieval practice, spaced repetition, immediate feedback, delivered again later rather than once at the worst possible moment.

The example that lands is apathy. A caregiver who understands apathy as a symptom stops reading it as their father giving up on them. That is not new information. It is the same information, finally retained, which is a different thing than being told.
