OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice launch video is built around older women

OpenAI Kept the Cast

In July, when OpenAI introduced GPT-Live, the video it chose was two older women at a table trying the new ChatGPT Voice. One of them asked it to simplify an answer. We wrote then that conversation is the one interface nobody has to learn, and that nearly every barrier between an 80-year-old and AI lived in the keyboard.

On September 23 OpenAI released the next chapter, and we are thrilled to see the same women back. This time the whole video is built around older women, baking in a kitchen, potting plants, laughing under the dryers at a salon, driving a red convertible, sailing in life jackets. And the feature has grown up. ChatGPT Voice can now reach into email, calendar and Slack and do the task, not just talk about it.

That is the half that matters at a kitchen table. A mother who will never open a calendar app can say "put the eye doctor on Thursday at two" and have it land where the whole family can see it. For a lot of families, that one sentence is the difference between a tool and a chore.

Two honest cautions. The same connection that writes to a calendar can read an inbox, and an older adult's inbox is where the scams arrive, so setting this up is a family job and so is checking on it. And this is an ad, so treat what it shows as a promise until it holds up in a real kitchen.

Still, notice who they cast. The company building one of the most capable AI systems in the world put its newest feature in the hands of the generation the rest of the industry sells fall alerts to. That is not a small choice.
