Cultural Feasibility of Conversational Robots for Dementia Care in India

The finding that will get repeated is the engagement rate: people with mild-to-moderate dementia spoke positively to the robots for more than 94 percent of the interaction time, across all three formats. Willingness was never the barrier.
The barrier was recognition. Participants disengaged when the system misheard them, and background noise, a household in other words, made it worse. A care robot that cannot parse an Indian accent in an Indian room is not a care robot in India. It is a demo that traveled.
Two other details are worth keeping. Stakeholders asked for a kind tone and appreciative language, which is a design specification, not a nicety. And caregivers raised the same worry the Japanese willingness study raised: where does the voice data go, and who gets to hear it.
Most care technology is designed in one place and shipped everywhere. This study is what it looks like when someone checks first, in the country where the dementia diagnosis gap runs near ninety percent.
