Do It Now: Living Fully While Caregiving with Heather Butchen

The notebook bought the surgery

Heather Butchen has been a care partner for more than a decade, since her husband Jeff was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's at 51. Across all of it she kept a medical journal: notes from every doctor's appointment, notes from support-group meetings, written down by hand and carried forward.

Then came the question of Deep Brain Stimulation surgery, and those notes turned out to be what made the conversation possible.

Read that sequence again, because it is the whole argument for keeping a record and almost nobody makes it this cleanly. She did not start the journal because she was told a neurosurgical decision was coming years later. She started it because appointments are confusing and memory is unreliable. The payoff arrived at a moment she could not have predicted, in a form she could not have planned for, and it arrived because the record already existed.

Everything else in the episode is her refusing to wait. A support group she and Jeff co-founded in 2014 and still run. The Sunflower Lanyard so airports stop being a reason not to travel. Boxing, because it is the rare exercise Jeff will actually keep doing. Conversation cards at dinner after 31 years, now that the kids have moved out and it is the two of them again. Her phrase for all of it is do it now.

We would only add the unglamorous half. The do-it-now list is the part families remember to build. The record is the part they build only in hindsight, after the appointment where somebody asked a question they could not answer.
