Someone finally asked

Three senators want the National Academies to find out how older adults are actually using AI. Not how the industry says they will. How they are.

A bill introduction is close to nothing. Most die quietly and this one may too. But it is the first time the question has been asked at this altitude, and the framing is unusually honest for a press release: the same tools that help someone stay in their house are the tools that will read them a convincing lie about their Medicare plan or their bank account. Both, from the same box, in the same voice.

Families already know this. Anyone who has watched a parent take a phone call seriously that should have been hung up on understands that the risk is not the technology being wrong. It is the technology being fluent. Fluent and patient and available at four in the afternoon when nobody else is.

What a study can produce, eventually, is a floor: some baseline about what these systems owe an eighty-six-year-old. Until then the oversight is a person. Usually an adult daughter, usually unpaid, usually already tired.
