A Map, Not a Brochure

Most free caregiver resources are a pamphlet with an email harvest attached. This one is not. The Alzheimer's Foundation of America has put out a stage-by-stage guide covering the things families actually get blindsided by: the diagnosis conversation, legal and financial planning, behavior and communication changes, making a home dementia-friendly, wandering and driving, when to look at long-term care, palliative care and hospice, and what all of it costs. What makes it better than most is not the price. It is the sequencing. Nearly all caregiver material is organized by topic, which quietly assumes you already know what you are looking for. Families do not. They know what just happened. Something built the way the disease actually unfolds meets people where they are, because the person who heard the word "Alzheimer's" in an exam room this morning needs a different page than the person deciding about hospice tonight.

The honest limit applies to every guide, ours included: a document cannot know your situation. It does not know your mother lives alone two states away, or that the aide quit on Tuesday, or that you have a teenager and a job. A guide is a map. It is not a GPS, and you still have to work out where you are standing.

But maps matter, particularly free ones with no strings attached. Download it before you need it. The worst possible time to start reading about hospice is the week somebody first suggests it.
